Happy Christmas from Tea & Make

So, this time last year we were coming to the end of the two weeks of our Pop-Up Shop, and we have sooooo missed not having a little shop this Christmas!!

But on the plus side this has left us both extra time to get making ourselves this year – we’ve been making presents from scratch, as well as adapting and personalising local finds, like prettying up some chutney jars from the Farmers’ Market. Cannot wait to see what our friends and families think on Christmas Day! We’ve also contributed to a Daily Mail article on exactly this subject - we will be posting more details on this next week.

We keep in touch with all our wonderful Tea & Makers and they are doing amazing things, so you’re sure to spot some of their work out and about this Christmas on your shopping sprees!! They have also been asking us when we’re putting on our next event, but sadly 2011 has gone by without a ‘Tea & Make do’, as we have been hugely busy with our own projects (do check out our websites if you’re curious about the other things we do… www.pheasantmailorder.co.uk and www.interim.org.uk) and we have also both moved home this year (as you can imagine this is no quick thing for two women who LOVE styling up their homes!!)

We have also been working on a little sister project to Tea & Make, which we are really looking forward to telling you all about next year. In the meantime have a wonderful Christmas and keep enjoying making, as well as seeing and buying all the wonderful work that’s out there!

Support FINDERS KEEPERS RECORDS after the Sony warehouse fire

As you all know, we're all about supporting amazing little businesses, and one which has always been very close to our hearts (you may have bought one of their records at our pop-up shop over Christmas) is the wonderful Finders Keepers Records (based in London and Manchester). One of the 3 founders, Doug Shipton, put out this open letter on Facebook this evening after 90% of their entire stock was burned in the the Sony warehouse fire on Monday night:

"As most of you are probably aware, owing to the tragic fire at Sony DADC in Enfield, PIAS UK's distribution centre, on Monday night during the rioting across London, Finders Keepers, Twisted Nerve, Bird, Battered Ornaments and our associated labels are among the countless other independent labels to have been directly affected. Early estimates indicate that approximately 90% of our stock has been destroyed leaving us with only a small number of limited titles in our office.

Firstly, words cannot describe how overwhelmed and grateful we are for all the support we've received in the past few days. As a fiercely independent label we have always relied on the passion and commitment not just of those who help us champion independent music but also those who support and buy our releases, enabling us to carry on doing what we love - a fact made all the more poigniant as we approach our 50th Finders Keepers release and 7th anniversary. So to all of you who have bought a record, a download, or have helped spread the word over the internet (ever!), THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

While we take stock of our losses and make plans for our immediate future it is important to remember that as we try to rebuild and while what has been destroyed can hopefully be replaced it is hard to quantify any material loss when people have lost their homes and indeed their lives in the past few days, but the sad fact is that a lot of honest and hardworking people's livlihoods (including countless friends and colleagues) are at risk as a result of what has happened.

We're sure that after the dust has settled there will be much debate over the past week's events but for now we need you to support your independent music scene in any way that you can - spread the word through social networking sites, buy from your favourite labels (many are still able to run mailorder services as well as offering their catalogues digitally) and don't forget your local independent record shops who will undoubtedly suffer in turn with the labels who have been affected.

We're very proud to see one of our lovely Tea & Makers, Zeena Shah taking her workshop skills one step further and teaching at a Printmaking Skill Share at Chesterton Community College later in the month. Since encouraging her to put on her first ever workshop - Christmas cracker-making - at one of our first events in SE London in Christmas '09, we also asked her to take part in our Friday Late at the V&A last April where she led a super-successful collective patchwork open-workshop... and onwards and upwards she's gone from there. Lino Printing Tutorial

All the hard work definitely meant our brains shut down completely over Christmas!! Happy Christmas

A big thank you from us at Tea & Make for all your support during 2010, whether you have taken part as a designer-maker, or as a punter! We've had a really fun time with you all at our events - this year we have been privileged to produce a Friday Late event for the V&A; run workshops at our favourite local event, Dulwich Festival Fair; produce our first Fete outside of London, at the wonderful Ye Old Ferrie Inn in Herefordshire; and made our dreams come true by opening a shop (albeit for 2 weeks only) in New Cross, London.

We have lots of exciting things planned for 2011, so we will keep you posted on news, but for now, have a very Happy Christmas, and we look forward to seeing you all again very soon!!

Old Tat into New Tags.
Collage up your gift tags with your favourite old fanzines, mags and postcards, fashion (cut) into a festive shape and then add that all-important ribbon-age.
Crepe (really, they're good) Garlands.
Pick two colours, cut two strips and weave away, pull it out to reveal a colourful decoration to cover your ceiling with, hang across the mantlepiece, drape around the tree...

Week Two - Saturday 4th til Saturday 11th December:
Traditional 80s Crackers.
We're talking crepe paper, metallic ribbons, Quality Street as the surprise...Blue Peter crafting with style.
Badge-making.
Tea & Make LOVE a great pin badge (in fact we'll be selling a few in the shop!), so we'll have everything you need to make your own from old 'zines, fabric or a hand-drawn design.

Really chuffed to have Random Retail at the shop - we've long admired their beautiful designs, and have seen them pop up in all kinds of style institutions, including The Hambledon and Anthropologie, over the last couple of years. The very clever Joy Jolliffe produces all of the hand-pulled, screenprinted designs herself in her Isle of Wight studio and then daughter Holly Jolliffe produces beautiful photographs of it all - a winning combination!

We've never had a shoe designer at a Tea & Make event before and we're really excited to have London-based Rose Choules and her gorgeous made-to-order mocassins with us at the pop-up in a few weeks time. She'll also have a few some "ready to go" designs there too with gloriously yummy floral fabric linings...

Her collaboration with a fabric designer on the floral fabric for her moccasins, also extends to some extremely smart canvas and leather tote and shopper bags as well as jewellery wraps which feature the floral fabric in their lining - can't wait to see them!

Yesterday's article in The Guardian (read it here) meant we just couldn't wait any longer to tell you about our latest project... Tea & Make will be 'popping-up' in New Cross, London for two weeks only, from Saturday 27th November until Saturday 11th December.

We have some really AMAZING designer-makers joining us (some of which we are welcoming to Tea & Make for the first time) and we are very happy that the lovely Barbara Frankie Ryan is joining us again, and is busy designing our flyer this time - we cannot wait to see what she comes up with!

We'll be posting details over the next few weeks, but for now put the dates in your diary - we would LOVE to see you all there :)

DJ duties have seen him traverse the globe sharing needle time with the likes of David Holmes, Jarvis Cocker, Cherrystones, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Richard Norris (Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve/The Time And Space Machine) and Graham Massey (808 State), whilst compilation call-ups have seen him pit his wits and his wax against The Gaslamp Killer, Bob Stanley (St. Etienne), and Chris Geddes (Belle & Sebastian) amongst others.

T & M at the E. Dulwich Fest

Esther and I had SUCH a lovely day at the East Dulwich Festival on Goose Green one Sunday - all the way back in May now.

As always, we were so impressed by what the kids drew and made - some brought a little tear to our eyes! There was flag-making, bunting making (which we strung along the front and sides of our little stall) and some incredible badges were made - some of which we were almost on the verge of buying back from the kids!

Can't wait to do it again next year...

Sorry for the lack of blogging recently everyone - Esther and I have (amongst recovering from the fun but madness of the V&A Friday Late) been busy doing all sorts - going to weddings, adding to the rabbit empire, getting tattoos, working hard on a PhD, eating cake at Browns of Brockley with dogs on our laps, sitting in our gardens, running a furniture company, visiting new family cocker spaniels...... BUT we are finding time to work on our next event so we will let you know about it soon - we're aiming for August and look forward to telling you more v. soon. Look out for a post over the next few days, on the lovely little stall we had at the East Dulwich Festival Fair back in May - so many sweet little creative types out there!

So we're getting mega excited about Friday now! Esther and I have been working every spare minute of the day (and night) for the last few months on this project - we've enjoyed every minute of it but can't wait for it to happen now! We're really sorry we've not been able to blog as much as we usually would - it's just been a tad hectic for us both but we are so, so pleased with what our artists and designers have come up with in the way of workshops and as ever, are so impressed by their creativity, enthusiasm and the top, top quality of their work - check out the websites for all involved at the bottom of this post.

Girl Racer
The 1970's Atari style racing game just got a little crafty! Take part in Clare Thornton's fun interactive sewing contest, presented during IgFest 2008 (Festival Award for Best Use of Technology). Four contestants will race against the clock in a battle of who can cross the finishing line first, only - the race tracks are made from 2m long rolls of paper printed with many obstacles to avoid. The first to cross the finishing line wins a chocolate medal. The fastest Girl or Boy Racer of the night wins a special rosette and a Tea & Make craft pack.

Patchwork Keepsake
Artist Zeena Shah will be creating an interactive quilting installation detailing our collective memory of the Tea & Make garden party - using the British quilting tradition to create a keepsake for the V&A. During the course of the evening she will create a patchwork quilt installation through workshops such as cross stitching, patchworking and appliqué, working onto various fabrics, and using these craft techniques to create individual patches.

A Monster for London
Tokyo has Godzilla, New York has King Kong and California has the 50 Foot Woman, but London is currently lacking any memorable oversized menace… Join Annabelle Hartmann and Kenn Munk as they explore mythical creatures to bring their own special twist on rural folklore to the V&A! Create your own paper-finger-puppet-monster by choosing from a range of body part rubber stamps and 'patching' together a scary menace Monster-makers will have the opportunity to pitch their creation against a choice of famous London landmarks, in a battle that is something between Rock-Paper-Scissors and Top Trumps.

Sketch-a-thread
Join artist Barbara Ryan as she creates an installation of threaded cross-stitch-style patterns. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from 200mm squared card with different configurations/sizes of laser cut holes. With their choice of coloured yarns participants will thread their design onto the card. The finished squares will then be added to a large hanging installation that will evolve over the course of the evening.

Gigantic Weaving Loom
Join textile artist Sara Tierney at our oversized loom, and have a go at weaving your own piece of magic.

DJ Doug Shipton
For your listening pleasure we present a bespoke guided tour of global folk treasures and lesser-spotted songbirds courtesy of Doug Shipton, renowned record hound, international DJ and co-founder of Finders Keepers Records.

Plus many more activities, including table-top craft boxes, a community notice board and an opportunity to share your handmade wares with the rest of the party. There will also be prizes for the best crafts created on the night.

The Stitch Surgery

As well as our own mini Tea & Make within the Friday Late event next week, we have been working on the styling of The V&A's 'The Stitch Surgery' for the night. From 6:30pm 'til 9:45pm you can collect a pack from the grand entrance of The V&A, which will include all that you need to make your own rosette or patch. The other 3 Stitch Surgery points dotted around the museum are manned, or should we say, "womaned" by the lovely lady volunteers from Dulwich Quilters, Region 1 of the Quilters Guild, who will be able to help you with any possible stitching "issues" you encounter as you make your little creation throughout the night.

Sorry it's been a little quiet on the T&M blogging front! With lots of little projects coming up, it's been tricky to pin one down specifically to tell you about. Probably the most exciting piece of news in T&M's short history (!) to date, is that The V&A have asked us to put on a Tea & Make for their next Friday Late to celebrate their promoted-everywhere-ever Quilts: 1700-2010 exhibition (http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/textiles/quilts-1700-2010/)! It's taken a lot of planning (and still is!) but it's going to be such a lovely evening! We'll be unveiling news on who will be joining us for this free event over the next few weeks but pencil it into your diaries now - Friday 30th April 6:30pm - 10pm!

Selvedge Advent 2009

To mark their first Christmas at ‘162 Archway Road’ Selvedge invited their favourite artists, designers and makers to contribute to their first ever ‘advent calendar’. The ‘Handmade Holiday’ pictures could represent any aspect of the season as long as it used a textile medium and was red and white.
Tea & Make commissioned the wonderful Sara Tierney, and she made this beautiful piece (inspired by our very own logo!)

New Years Distractions....

So the blog's been a little quiet since our December event - Esther and I have both been a little busy with the distractions of a New Year and new projects - amongst other things, Esther has recently been awarded a PhD scholarship from the University of the West of England, researching "The Creative Industries/The Creative Practitioner, focussing on the influence of mobile devices and social collaboration upon the creation of new technology-based craft." - see below...

and amongst lots of work commitments, from running Pheasant, to re-designing the branding and interior of a new pub in Wales with Esther, I have found time to take on 2 more rescue babies....

BUT we will be bringing you news of Tea & Make events and projects for 2010 very soon...

Very sadly, the lovely Polly George (http://pollygeorge.com/) is now unable to attend on Saturday - we'll really miss her there but look forward to having her at our next Spring/Summer event. However, the great news is that we have a very talented milliner joining us - Jennifer Levet. Trained in costume design and period millinery, she has an extensive background in running theatrical wardrobes, and "grew up with a mum obsessed with quilting - I love collecting printed cottons as a result and always instantly fall in love with trimmings and beads". Check out some of her gorgeous creations:

Jennifer says she "will be bringing some funky patterned printed cotton headresses and hats, with one or two feathers thrown in for good measure!". Can't wait to try them all on and make a cheeky purchase? Nor can we.

'The Sydenham and Forest Hill Youth Forum is an organisation dedicated to improving the wellbeing of local young people. We run training courses for young people on various topics, advertise local free events and activities on our web site, run youth-led forums to continually get young people involved in issues that affect them. We also hold adult-based meetings to relay our consultation back to those who provide services to young people. We are also in the process of setting up a community fund based on small monthly donations from the community that will go towards funding current gaps in youth provision.

With the money donated from Tea & Make we hope to run creative sessions with local teenagers, getting them to design some t shirts to advertise our forum. We also hope to build up a relationship with Tea & Make and find ways art can improve the overall feel of Forest Hill, Sydenham and Perry Vale.'

After all of the rushing around at our first Tea & Make, I (Sally) never did have a really good look at all of the stalls properly - and that's kind of half of the indulgent point of Tea & Make really if we're honest! It's a collective of designers whose pieces we really love all in one place for us (and lots of other people) to coo over and spend all of our pennies on! One of the stalls I'd like to have a proper look at at the Christmas event is Cup Of Sea - I love the colours on their Lightning and Clouds Acrylic Rings and at just $8 on Etsy it's a pretty bargainous piece of "ring candy" as Cup of Sea founder and designer Leese Johnstone calls it.

Based in South London (just around the corner from St Saviours actually!), Camilla makes her own delicious London honey (and honey cakes, and beeswax candles!) to sell, as well as educating people on the importance of the conservation of the endangered honey bee, and helping people to set up their own hive of bees to make their own lovely honey, even in an urban setting. If you have any questions about honey or bees, Camilla is on-hand to answer them! She'll also be selling her honey (we can't wait to stock up), books on keeping bees, and some vintage bee-keeping kit too - from jars to equipment.

Last night Esther and I popped along to see what the V&A Village Fete had to offer, and we met up with future Tea & Make-exhibitors Garudio Studiage, winning one of their very special (and pretty priceless actually) golden cats in their cool competition - we can't wait to have them at Tea & Make!

Great news - yet another amazing design duo will be joining us on the 22nd August... This time it's 'The Artic', a collaboration between graphic designer Kenn Munk and his partner, artist and illustrator Annabelle Hartmann.

Promising an arctic-themed stall, they'll be selling everything from eskimo toys to polar bear paper kits, as well as providing a little mask-making workshop complete with "polar photo opportunities" - sounds brilliant!
